Def Leppard Make Up For ‘Kick’ With New Single ‘Take What You Want’

Fans of the traditional, hard rocking, Def Leppard sound are sure to be thrilled with the new single ‘Take What You Want.’ Released off of the new ‘Diamond Star Halos.’ It’s the total opposite counterpart of the dreadful ‘Kick.’ Which is a major breath of fresh air.

When ‘Kick’ was released as the first single, I was really disappointed. And skeptical of the potential direction the new album may have. Despite many folks liking the song, I thought it was the most ‘sell out,’ generic and simply lame material Def Leppard have ever released. In a long, storied career mind you. But my fears have been set aside with the new ‘Take What You Want.’ The best new material Def Leppard have released since 1999’s ‘Euphoria.’

This song is such a wonderful change of pace. Particularly in the current musical climate we are regrettably living in. And ‘Kick’ is very much a part of that climate. However, ‘Take What You Want’ is a total rocker through and through. A catchy as all hell riff, guitar melodies, that massive Rick Allen drum sound and excellent vocal melodies and harmonies. The band really put some thought and umph into this one. Vivian Campbell’s and Phil Collen’s solos are top notch for the song. Not too shreddy, good feel and technical showmanship.

‘Take What You Want’ is the song that’s needed now more than ever. A true hard rock piece that still provides sing along vocal melodies. While still retaining its heavy tendencies. Any younger bands out there that want to ‘rock,’ need to give this a listen. This is how you do it. It’s timeless and it kicks ass. Do it right, put in the practice and you can continue to fly flag as well. Hopefully the rest of the album leans in this direction. Time will tell.
