King’s X – The Most Underrated Band of All Time? Yes!

King’s X is, without question, the most underrated band in rock, metal or any other genre for that matter.  The power trio consisting of Dug Pinnick (bass, vocals), Ty Tabor (guitar, vocals) and Jerry Gaskill (drums, vocals) holds it down like no other.  Seriously, there is no other band that sounds like these guys.   They’re perfect blending of funk, heavy metal, British invasion vocal harmonies, gospel and prog is something of a wonder.  Mostly a wonder as to how they aren’t one of the biggest bands in the world.  Not only do they have seamless feel and musicianship, they can also write a damn good song!  As complicated as all their elements are it’s also that simple.  Song’s like ‘Goldilox’ and ‘Summerland’ are prime examples.  Just pure songwriting excellence.  So why aren’t they selling out stadiums?  It’s not like their unbelievable debut ‘Out of the Silent Planet’ came out at the wrong time.  1988 was the prime musical atmosphere for a song like ‘Goldilox’.  And their sound evolved with the changing musical climate of the 90’s.  Which many in the community claim they are responsible for in the first place.  And unlike 99% of their peers they did it without sounding forced.  Unfortunately King’s X were mismanaged from the start of their climb.  First off, they relocated to Houston from Springfield, MO.  I think moving to Seattle or Los Angeles would have been smarter.  They would have stood out in a big scene as opposed to being the scene.  Secondly they were initially promoted as a Christian band.  While spirituality is an important theme in their lyrics, they are not a Christian band.  And their songs certainly don’t force any beliefs.  So I never understood why they were promoted as Christian.  Finally their label, Atlantic did very little to promote the group.  Especially in ’96 during the ‘Ear Candy’ era when it really counted.  It’s unfortunate because they write hook after hook, riff after riff.  I’ve never heard a band that writes more complete albums than King’s X.  At first you’re like, ‘Damn that’s best riff I’ve ever heard.’  Then the next song comes and it’s an even better riff, vocal hook or jam.  Sometimes all three at the same time!  And then you think ‘Well, it’s a trio and they’re using a lot of studio tricks to get their sound that thick.’  Then you hear them live and it sounds kind of totally exactly like the album.  Truly amazing!  Jerry Gaskill and Ty Tabor have the same singing voice so when they harmonize it sounds like an overdub.  Oh, and they all have perfect pitch.  Then they extend their songs out with open jams, sing along moments and inspiring sermons.  Needless to say, their live shows are quite an experience.  It is a spiritual experience.  So it’s easy to understand why some would think they may be a Christian band.  Because they are a spiritual group.  Either way, they’re the baddest fucking band in the world and it’s just a shame more people don’t know about them.  Do they need to be the biggest band in the world?  No.  But the fact that they aren’t a household name is just shameful to our culture.

This song should have made King’s X the biggest band in the world.  Just a crime.

If not that song than this one.  It’s not like they don’t have the sound, the look, the passion, the hooks.

And their sound evolved and grew with the changing music industry.  This song is also a prime example of how they combine heavy with harmony at the height of the grunge revolution.  Which some, including Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam, claim King’s X started.

Really stretching the melody and metal contrast here.  Love it when all three sing their own part.  Notice how Jerry and Ty sound so similar.  Then they enter this thick, churning metal breakdown.

And live.  It doesn’t get much better.  Inspiring!!

One more inspiring jam.  Why aren’t they selling out the local stadium?!  Oh, and Ty Tabor is without a doubt the most overlooked guitar player of a generation.

The vids don’t lie.  The music really speaks for itself.  There really aren’t actual words that can state how underrated this band is.  So you have to listen for yourself to really get it.  Either way, they exist.  And for those of us who are lucky enough to have them in our lives should be eternally grateful.

  1. GREAT article. I’ve been saying this for decades and hardly anyone listens. Which I get – I didn’t even like them at first, then I re-listened to Gretchen out of desperation one day for something new. It was like hearing music for the first time again. I’ve been able to meet the guys and hang out with them several times (mostly in the 90’s when a band I fronted played some of the same venues) I’ve really grown to appreciate Dug’s wisdom and view of life. Funny story = I was in a library a few years ago with a Dogman shirt on and a girl walks around the corner, looks at it and says, “King’s X….you guys are like a cult group, huh?” I just shrugged and said, “yeah, I guess.” That’s the loyalty they inspire – you did a great job of capturing what they’re all about here. One more KX story – I had a heart transplant in 2016 and it was really risky. I’d reconnected with Dug a few months prior at a show after about ten years. He called me in the hospital to check on me after the surgery – it was a real encouragement. This is how they treat their fans. Great music, great guys. Glad I discovered your site. Cheers.

  2. Im Just noticing this band after 40 years and my neglect is utterly embarrassing. Being from The Lone star state, why they are not on the same plane as ZZtop, SRV and Eric Johnson is mind boggling. Im from Stevie Rays hometown for Gods sake.. Thanks for the great insight. Kings X is a hall of fame level band in its own right.
