Mastodon are back again with a teaser that amounts to some of the best work they’ve ever done. The entirely kick ass ‘Pushing the Tides’ is the first single to drop from their upcoming double album. And it’s a more than welcome addition to a catalog that seems to keep getting better and better.
The three and a half minute track is an onslaught of metal quality. Driving rhythms, killer riffs, memorable vocal melodies and harmonies. Everything you want from Mastodon and more. It’s a perfect balance of progressive metal and accessible, melodic metal that has the ability to appeal to the masses. And that’s the formula that Mastodon has had since their masterpiece ‘Crack the Skye.’
To pinpoint a specific Mastodon track that furthers the bands legacy is moot. It’s all good. And they keep moving forward. Providing the excellence of metal for the current generations and the upcoming. ‘Pushin the Tides’ is no different. A welcome addition to what Mastodon have been doing. The only downside is that we’ve had to wait four years before this kick ass material was released.
The upcoming album is a double. Roughly 90’s minutes of material, the speculation is that Mastodon are going to hit their peak. And we can’t wait to hear what’s in store.
