Metal Anniversary – 10/01/96 – 25 Years of Tool’s ‘Aenima’

It’s one of the seminal alternative metal releases of all time. And often regarded by many fans to be Tool’s finest hour. And a peak example of the direction that heavy music was heading in the late 90’s. I’m talking, of course, about Tool’s ‘Aenima.’

Prior to ‘Aenima,’ Tool were primarily known as somewhat of a ‘grunge’ alternative. Exchanging punk and plaid for deep, heavy grooves that resembled more of the heavier bands at the time. But with their second album, Tool expanded their vision to parts previously unknown in the heavy music community. With the addition of new bassist, Justin Chancellor, Tool would form their ‘signature’ sound with ‘Aenima.’ The album that propelled Tool into mega-star status.

The album opens with the ultimate signature ‘Stinkfist.’ A fan favorite concert staple that was used as the set closer on the last tour. The catchy, intense groove is synonymous with the Tool sound. ‘Eulogy’ starts with the now typical Tool rhythm that builds and builds for about two to three minutes before displaying the full song. The time changes, power chords and moody lyrics all serve to create a unique, groove metal piece. Danny Carey’s drumming sounds superb. ‘H.’ serves as the first really spacey Tool track. A sound that dominated their most recent record. There’s also countless instrumental interludes between songs. A trope that Tool would go on to cherish for the rest of their career. ‘Useful Idiot,’ ‘Message to Harry Manback,’ and ‘Intermission’ all serve to create that alternative metal sound that is so freakin’ 90’s.

‘Forty Six & 2’ is the track that really establishes the direction that Tool were heading in. And have continued to be in. ‘Hooker With a Penis’ is actually one of the catchiest songs in all of Tool’s catalog. A throwback to the early grooves of the bands inception. ‘Jimmy’ brings in the heavy, chill vibes. While ‘Pushit’ and the title track hold down the back end of the album. The album closes with ‘Third Eye.’ Which is frankly not the greatest. But it fits the bigger picture of the album. Which is a high concept that Tool usually roll with.

Overall, ‘Aenima’ is the Tool album that really started their signature sound. It’s now a stone cold classic. And Tool are now established as one of the great Prog/Alt bands of all time. So, turn off the lights and crank this record. It’s a full immersive experience. And an album that continues to inspire.
